The Umoja ASTEP mentoring component.
Select students are matched with a mentor - either a BC faculty/staff/administrator or a Bakersfield community member. Matching is as much as possible by gender and by career interest. Mentors encourage and form relationships with their mentees. Students and mentors meet twice a month, and students complete three assignments per semester based on their conversation with their mentor. Each assignment has a theme and is worth 20 points. Being able to meet with and learn from a mentor is a valuable opportunity. If you request a mentor, you are committing to setting aside the time to meet with your mentor twice a month. Remember, participating in the mentoring component is optional.
Students who choose not to have a mentor can make up the assignments by attending Umoja Club activities and completing a short writing assignment. If you are not requesting a mentor, you are committing to being involved in the Umoja Club and attending the meetings and activities or attending Umoja Indabas.
You can, of course, have a mentor and be involved in the Club and attend Indabas.
