Thank you for your interest in being an Umoja ASTEP mentor!
Umoja ASTEP mentors provide encouragement for students in the program. Mentors are matched by gender and, whenever possible, by career interest. Mentors should connect with their mentees twice a month. One meeting is around an assignment, and the other meeting is open. Students and mentors meet at mutually convenient times either virtually or off campus. In between meetings, students and mentors can also connect by phone, email, or text.
Umoja students must request a mentor and commit to being engaged. Students earn extra credit points by meeting with their mentor and turning in the meeting form. They are graded on the monthly assignment.
The mentor should be a sounding board and guide students to solve their challenges. The mentor helps students navigate the college experience. The mentor is not a tutor and is not expected to help with homework, although the mentor is welcome to read and discuss class texts with their mentee. The mentor is also not expected to provide financial support for students. This semester, in the midst of pandemics, mentors are especially needed to support, to encourage, and to connect.
If the mentor is in a related field that the student is pursuing, the mentor can invite the student to his/her place of employment (following the governor's guidelines on physical distancing and mask wearing) and provide career advice or connections. The mentor should model professional behavior and communication skills to help students reach their personal and academic goals.
with deep appreciation,
----- Dr. Paula L. Parks, Umoja ASTEP coordinator
